Safe Disposal

Why safe disposal? Proper disposal of opioids reduces the risk of misuse and abuse and it also helps prevent those medications from entering the environment and harming the water and wildlife.

Unused or expired medications should be properly disposed at a secure collection location.

Colorado has over 100 permanent take-back locations located throughout the state. To find one near you, visit www.takemedsseriously.org and look for the Safe Disposal box on the home page. The site includes both an interactive map and a list of locations. There you can also find a list of medications, over the counter drugs and even veterinary medications that are accepted. You can also learn how to host a take back day or start a take back program.

Another option for safe disposal is drug deactivation pouches that allow for safe disposal at home. The JP Opioid Interaction Alliance is proud to partner with Deterra, a company that offers a patented, easy-to-use drug disposal system that renders drugs unavailable for misuse and provides for safe for disposal in the normal trash.
